Ducati Globetrotter 90th
One bike. Seven riders. 145 days e 29.450 kilometers to ride.
90 years of history and passion to be celebrated with a world around trip.
The journey will start July 4th , the exact date of Ducati’s foundation, from Borgo Panigale, and then the route will head east across Europe. It will then follow the legendary Trans-Siberian route, taking in Russia, Mongolia, China and then Japan before crossing the ocean to the USA and heading back home across Western Europe. Before returning to Borgo Panigale, the closing miles of this round-the-world trip will include the exhilarating bends of the Futa Pass near Bologna (where many Ducati bikes have been developed and tested over the years). The expected return date is 15 December 2016.
The start of this tough 30,000 km 120-day odyssey will be the new Multistrada 1200 Enduro. The new Borgo Panigale-built multibike will, quite literally, be a ‘torch bearer’, carrying a special flame designed by the Ducati Style Center: a fitting symbol for that passion which burns so bright in Ducati.
The trip will be divided into seven stages, to be completed by seven different riders, that Ducati has selected trough an online submission started in April 2016. The requirement were tough: applicants needed to be competent motorcyclists with wanderlust and will also need to have a good level of English. Another key quality will be a natural gift for storytelling, in both written and photographic form.
More than 3000 candidates filled out the form. The Initial candidate assessment has given rise to 14 finalists that challenged a special Bootcamp, June 14th in Nipozzano, on the Tuscany Hills. This secondary selection process involved evaluation of riding skills and psycho-aptitude testing under the supervision of a professional team that includes former Paris-Dakar racer Beppe Gualini.
They were 3000, and only 7 made it. Discover who they are and follow their adventure live.
The 90th Anniversary Torch
The 90th anniversary torch was designed by the Ducati Design Center in collaboration with the Research and Development office and it is quite unique. This torch, a union of design and technology, will stand over the Globetrotter relay race during its world tour.
It was inspired by the characteristic Ducati trellis frame, while the fairing and mechanical elements of Ducati motorcycles inspired the torch’s exterior; finally, the upper and lower caps bear the characteristic design of the steering head ring nut designed by Massimo Tamburini for the ‘916.
The exterior is made of sintered titanium and sintered composite material (3D printed), and covered with metal. The interior was modelled using generative and algorithmic design methods, and evokes actual natural structures.
The torch will also tell the story of the Globetrotter’s journey thanks to the built-in camera and video camera, and will be used to take photos and videos of this incredible adventure.
The 90° torch has been given to the first Globetrotter, Vir Nakai by Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali on Ducati 90th birthday, July 4th 2016, and will pass from hand to hand until the comeback journey to Borgo Panigale.
